Children and young people with vision impairments are making waves thanks to specially tailored swimming lessons organised by Southampton Specialist Teacher Advisors and generously subsidised by Southampton Sight. The lessons are delivered by a very experienced teacher at the Red Lodge Community Pool Ltd. These weekly sessions are designed to help participants gain confidence, develop vital swimming skills, and enjoy the benefits of being active in the water.

The programme caters to a wide age range. Younger children are currently working towards the Swim England Discovery Duckling 1 Award, which focuses on becoming comfortable and confident in the water with a trusted adult. Meanwhile, older participants are developing skills that will allow them to transition into after-school swimming lessons, following the national Stages 1–7 framework.

The progress has been remarkable. Each week, children show greater independence, improved technique, and most importantly enjoyment. One young swimmer shared, “I can’t believe I was scared of water and now I love swimming.”

This initiative not only promotes physical health and water safety but also helps children build confidence, resilience, and a love for learning new skills. With continued support from Southampton Sight, these young swimmers are proving that with the right support, anything is possible.
