Last Thursday Southampton Sight ran another successful drop-in session at University Southampton Hospital’s Patient & Family Support Hub, answering questions from patients and NHS staff as well as spreading the word about the wide variety of support available to those living with sight loss in Southampton. We also had a visit from Pets As Therapy dog, Toby (yes, another Toby!) who unsurprisingly stole the show!

Alongside generously offering a space for charities and community groups to host support sessions and drop-ins, the Hub is a welcoming, calm environment for patients, families, and unpaid carers.

Run by a dedicated team of staff and brilliant volunteers, the Hub provides a broad range of free services and practical activities designed to make your hospital experience a little easier. Some of these include:

  • • A Warm Welcome: Drop in for a friendly chat, a cup of tea, a bit of quiet space, or a comfortable spot to wait. There is also a beautiful garden which is open 24 hours a day.
  • Toys & activities: the bright and airy space boasts a range of toys, colouring materials and more to keep the little ones occupied while waiting for appointments.
  • Companion Service: Pre-book a companion volunteer to help guide you to your outpatient appointments and find your way around the hospital.
  •  Expert Signposting & Advice: Quick connections to community-based voluntary services, as well as on-site financial advice and support.
  • Carers support service: including new showers and changing facilities.

Whether you need practical help getting to an appointment or just a quiet place to recharge, the Hub has its doors open for you. Southampton Sight will be back next month so please come and say hello.
