Last Wednesday showed just how powerful community can be when everyone brings what they have to the table.
Volunteers from Specsavers stepped into the kitchen to prepare and serve a warm meal creating a welcoming space for people living with sight loss to come together. But the heart of the day belonged to the individuals with sight loss who led a powerful awareness session afterwards, sharing their lived experience with honesty, clarity, and courage.
Because sight loss awareness is strongest when it comes from the people who live it every day. They spoke about the challenges they navigate. They shared practical insights that only experience can teach. They opened the door to understanding in a way no textbook or training ever could.
And the people who came to enjoy the meal, all living with sight loss, didn’t just gather for food. They gathered for connection, community, and friendship and a quiz or two!
These moments may seem small, but they shift perspectives, build empathy, and strengthen the bonds that make communities thrive. They remind us that ability isn’t defined by sight — it’s defined by contribution.
Dawn from Specsavers said “We absolutely loved the day; your team were amazingly supportive and so passionate – they really made our day very special. We had fun cooking and meeting your lunch guests and hearing their stories. We all feel better informed and more aware of people coping with varying degrees of sight loss and how we can help. Can you pass our thanks to the team.”
Serve where you stand. Use what you have. Your story, your presence, and your courage might be exactly what someone else needs today.
