We here at Southampton Sight are always keen to provide activities for the visually impaired that may otherwise be unavailable. From weekly lane swimming sessions at The Quays, to paddle-boarding and axe-throwing adventure days at Woodmill, we passionately believe that sight loss is no barrier to learning new skills, making new friends, and , above all, having fun.
And so, when approached by a parent of a visually impaired child, asking if we knew of anyone currently running swimming lessons specifically for those living with sight loss, we sprang into action.
Mainstream lessons, with their emphasis on visual learning from a tutor poolside, simply don’t cut the mustard for anyone with sensory loss. What was needed was a tailored program of lessons focused around the specific teaching and support needs of V.I. children, many of whom had never taken to the water before.
In partnership with Southampton City Council’s SEND Specialist Teacher Advisor Team, the initial six week lessons have been a resounding success. All of our fledglings have quite literally taken to the pool like the proverbial ducks to water, achieving their Duckling Award Badge and discovering the fun, confidence, and health benefits swimming brings.
As one parent said, “His physiotherapist is so pleased he is swimming as it is the best exercise.” Another commented, “I haven’t been able to find a swimming class that I could afford for him and he has done so well now – I can’t get him out of our pool at home!”
A massive well done to all! And a big thank you to everyone involved who helped us get these lessons up and running. With a further two groups already planned for this coming September, going forward there will be no lack of little ducklings becoming swimming swans.
