Without doubt, volunteers are the life blood of any charity. Here at Southampton Sight, no matter the body of staff, without their selfless dedication we simply could not offer the range of support and activities currently on offer. From social lunches to evening youth groups, drivers to one-to-one buddy calls, the strength of our success relies upon the strengths and relationships we have with our volunteers. An opportunity to both celebrate and reflect, it was with great pleasure that we hosted a Volunteers Conference during National Trustee Week
Joined by Jess from Options Wellbeing, the day began with a lively discussion around the topic of boundaries and safeguarding. It is simply not possible to give so much and not blur the lines between volunteer and friend. Many had insightful thoughts on the subject, and much food for thought.
After a poignant moment of remembrance for those lost in war, an outline of successes from our CEO, Jackie Powers, was next on the agenda. Small we might be, but Southampton Sight is never afraid to punch above our weight. Advocating and positive campaigning, sight awareness training, emotional wellbeing… the list goes on. All made possible by the efforts and energy of those in attendance.
And so to the trustees who, themselves, provide vital guidance and knowledge, our living library. Each brings their own unique perspective and skills to the charity, not least of which due to 50% being themselves visually impaired. But one merited special recognition. Having served as both volunteer and trustee for 30 years, Tom McInulty was presented with a rose plant, suitably named Tommy, in recognition of his invaluable contribution to Southampton Sight.
A delicious lunch followed, all the excuse needed to spoil our honoured guests. And with that, gifts in hand, the day came to a close. With full bellies and full hearts our amazing team left knowing the impact they have in our community, and, above all else, how valued they are.
