On 11th June, Stuart McKenzie attended a special event in London hosted by the WEA, the national adult education college.  The occasion celebrated the contributions of outstanding students, tutors and volunteers from across the country who provided a special service for the WEA.  Stuart proudly took home the runner-up prize for the Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service.

Stuart’s journey began two and a half years ago at a Working Age Lunch at Southampton Sight, where he first voiced his desire to return to education as a visually impaired learner.  Encouraged by Jackie and Kris, he enrolled in a WEA counselling course – a subject he had previously studied as a sighted student.

It wasn’t long before his natural ability to support peers caught the attention of the WEA Centre Manager, who recognised Stuart’s background in teacher training.  Impressed by his skills and experience, she invited him to begin teaching as a volunteer.

Today, Stuart not only teaches with the WEA but also leads Southampton Sight’s acclaimed VIEW emotional wellness courses.  A remarkable journey and a richly deserved recognition – well done, Stuart!

This is the WEA description of the award:  WEA Volunteer – Outstanding Volunteer – This award is in recognition of an outstanding volunteer who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to furthering the goals of the WEA, whether supporting learners, taking an active role in our governance or championing learning locally.
