When it comes to team building, nothing quite hits the spot like a delicious pizza topped with a smattering of social value and a dash of empathy. Walking a mile in someone else’s shoes can make all the difference, but what about wearing their apron?
We here at Southampton Sight were thrilled to host our inaugural Cooking Blind event for an intrepid and eager group of guinea pigs kindly released from their usual work duties by Ageas Insurance. Eager to taste the difference and jeopardy that cooking blind can bring, our four willing ‘victims’ were thrown into the deep end of sight loss with a mixture of tasks and tastings all with blindfolds and simi-specs firmly in place.
From Toast to tea, chopping to grating, the simplest of everyday tasks soon proved anything but routine when tackled sightless. Steve, a claims evaluator at Ageas, echoed the group when he said ‘you just don’t think about how others live until you are living It yourself’. Walker, another of the group, added ‘you don’t imagine something as simple and everyday as making toast can become so difficult’.
Aided and abetted by a range of assistive equipment, specialised tuition, sighted guidance, and a large dollop of trial and error, the resulting pizzas were not only satisfying to the stomach, but genuine food for the soul.
