It was great to spend some time on Monday morning at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust helping kick off the 4th year medical students’ ophthalmology teaching week. I had the chance to share my story, the realities of living with sight loss, the challenges that come with it, and how those experiences shape everyday life.
At Southampton Sight, we strongly believe that real-life experiences matter. It’s so important for future healthcare professionals to hear directly from people living with sight loss, not just learn from textbooks. Giving students the opportunity to “walk in our shoes” helps build empathy, understanding, and ultimately better patient care.
A huge thank you to everyone who welcomed me. hopefully, it gave the students something meaningful to take forward into their careers.
