This new implant has helped people with an advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) called geographic atrophy (GA) to read again. The condition affects more than 250,000 people in the UK and five million worldwide.
The microchips were implanted in five patients at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London as part of the UK arm of the international trial with encouraging results.
