Southampton Sight have been training 4 more Sight Loss Nurse Advisors who will provide information, support and referral for patients with sight loss at the eye unit in Southampton. We use the social model of disability to encourage patients to be independent and have choice and control over their own lives. The model of the Sight Loss Advisor service is a collaboration between the hospital, local authorities and sight loss charities that ensures a smooth and rapid referral and support for the patient. Sight Loss Nurse Advisors ensure close links with clinical staff so that patients are referred proactively, including before SI registration, to enable early interventions. Here at Southampton Sight we like to put them through their paces – here they are walking on the common using a long cane and cooking with simulation specs.
