Living with sight loss can be challenging, especially when the journey involves complex diagnoses, hospital appointments, and life adjustments. Navigating what comes next can, at first, seem confusing, not knowing what to ask, who to talk to, or where to turn.

Southampton Sight’s Sight Loss Nurse Advisor programme, delivered in partnership with University Hospital Southampton’s ophthalmology department, is designed to answer these questions.

Trained by those with lived experience of sight loss here at Southampton Sight, our innovative collaboration places dedicated Sight Loss Nurse Advisors (SLNA) at the heart of the patient experience, offering personalised, compassionate support embedded within the Eye Unit, ensuring access to clear information, emotional reassurance, and practical guidance tailored to individual needs.

Bridging the gap between clinical excellence and community care, the Sight Loss Nurse Advisors help patients understand their condition, their treatment options, and the support available beyond the hospital walls. This joined‑up approach means patients receive continuity of care at a time when they need it most.

The SLNA can assist with:

– Understanding medical information and treatment plans

– Navigating hospital services

– Accessing community resources, rehabilitation services, and assistive technology

– Exploring benefits, entitlements, and support networks

Working together, the Sight Loss Nurse Advisor programme  ensures that support doesn’t end when the hospital appointment does.
