“It was one of the best workshops that I have experienced in many years of teaching. Insightful and extremely engaging on every level. All staff were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. A great big thank you from Kingfisher Class.” Mr Tee Fairisle Primary School
Great to get this wonderful feedback from one of the Primary Schools in Southampton. Southampton Sight runs a programme in Primary Schools to encourage children to be aware of others with Visual Impairments and how important it is to look after their eye health. This is done through talk and practical activities that encourage children to think about how people with Visual Impairments might see the world differently, and the challenges this may present. We also encourage children to recognise that people with Visual Impairment can be active and involved in daily life and activities. The session is designed to include practical hands on exploration of ideas and is delivered by Simon (partially sighted), Kate (and her ‘eyes’ Angela) and volunteers. At the end of the session the children are given a ‘Sight Awareness Champion’ wrist band and a leaflet to take home with tips on how to look after their own eyesight and the importance of regular eye tests. We are currently booked into 15 primary schools (approximately 750 pupils) in Southampton in the next 6 months.
